“I don’t agree with that. It’s clear he hasn’t been at his best, but getting dropped doesn’t signal the end,” Ferguson explained. “This happens in football. Barry was honest with him—it’s a decision based on performance. That doesn’t mean Butland can’t bounce back.”
Ferguson believes Butland has the strength of character to respond positively and sees this moment as an opportunity for growth rather than a full stop.
“He’ll reflect, he’ll work on his weaknesses. He’s not someone who’ll crumble,” Ferguson added. “Some players lose belief when benched, but Jack isn’t that kind of player—or at least I hope not. He needs to take this setback, learn from it, and come back stronger. His Rangers journey isn’t over.”
As things stand, Liam Kelly appears to be Ferguson’s first-choice keeper, especially with Rangers still clinging to their European campaign. Thursday’s second leg against Athletic Club in Spain looms large, and all signs point to Kelly retaining his place once again.
