Despite the Hammers’ clear need for firepower, Potter chose not to turn to 20-year-old striker Evan Ferguson when replacing the underperforming Niclas Füllkrug. The German forward, signed from Borussia Dortmund last summer to bolster West Ham’s attack, has failed to live up to expectations, leaving Potter frequently relying on the likes of Jarrod Bowen and Mohamed Kudus to play out of position as central attackers.
In a move that surprised many, Füllkrug was taken off in the second half, but instead of introducing Ferguson—on loan from Brighton and a natural striker—Potter opted to bring on Tomas Soucek, a defensive-minded midfielder. The decision led Sky Sports pundit Michael Dawson to openly question Potter’s thinking.
“Niclas Fullkrug has come off, and you’d think Evan Ferguson would be brought on – just as a straight swap,” said Dawson. “No. Tomas Soucek’s come on. And I think that says it all about Evan Ferguson at West Ham.”
Ferguson’s brief stint at West Ham has been underwhelming. After a lack of first-team opportunities at Brighton earlier in the campaign, the highly rated youngster made the January move to East London with hopes of reviving his season. However, his time at the London Stadium has been just as frustrating, with limited minutes and a lack of trust from the manager.
Once touted as one of the Premier League’s most exciting striker prospects during the 2023/24 season, Ferguson’s stock has clearly dipped. A summer return to Brighton appears inevitable, and speculation is already swirling around his next potential move, with Leeds United reportedly interested in his services.
At just 20 years old, Ferguson still has time on his side, but the recent snub only highlights the uncertainty surrounding his development. For now, questions remain—not only about Ferguson’s future, but also about Graham Potter’s tactical approach as West Ham continue to search for a reliable solution in attack.
