Barry Ferguson Ready to Lead Rangers Long-Term – But Won’t Manage Anywhere Else

Barry Ferguson has officially entered the race to become the next permanent Rangers manager, expressing unwavering belief in his ability to restore success at Ibrox. After initially brushing off speculation, the interim boss now says he’s ready to take the reins full-time—if given the chance by the club’s incoming American ownership group, led by Andrew Cavanagh and backed by the San Francisco 49ers.

Since stepping in to replace Philippe Clement on a temporary basis in February, Ferguson has overseen a mixed bag of results. While Rangers secured high-profile victories against Celtic and Fenerbahce, their domestic inconsistencies have allowed Celtic to edge closer to a fourth consecutive league title.

Despite the ups and downs, Ferguson—who was a Record Sport columnist and club ambassador before being asked to step in—has grown into the role and now firmly believes he has what it takes to bring lasting change.

“If I’m appointed, I’ll make this club stronger. If I’m not, I’ll continue supporting it. That’s how much it means to me,” Ferguson said ahead of the weekend clash with St Mirren. “I’ve had a few tough moments since coming in, but I wasn’t afraid of the challenge. I know what Rangers needs after being inside the club these past couple of months.”

Although he acknowledges there are more experienced candidates in the frame, Ferguson insists he won’t shy away from the competition.

“I’ll always back myself. I might not appeal to everyone, but with the team I’ve brought in, I know I can deliver.”

Ferguson’s managerial background includes stints at Clyde, Kelty Hearts, and Alloa in the lower leagues. However, he made it clear that if he doesn’t get the Rangers job, he won’t be looking to continue his coaching career elsewhere.

“This is my club,” he explained. “I had no plans to get back into coaching, but when the call came, I couldn’t say no. I’ve loved every second—even the hard parts. I’m not in this for a career elsewhere. If it’s not this role, I’ll happily return to the position I had before and support the team I love.”

Ferguson also dismissed the idea of staying on in a supporting role under a new manager, underlining that his commitment to Rangers is as a leader or not at all.
