Leeds United star Wilfried Gnonto is hitting top form just as his club prepares for its Premier League return—netting in consecutive games for the first time this season and drawing praise from current and former teammates alike.
With just one fixture left in the Championship season, Leeds remain locked in a race for the title with Burnley, both clubs having already clinched promotion. Should both sides secure victory on the final day, they will finish the season level on 100 points—Leeds face relegation-threatened Plymouth, making them strong contenders to top the table.
Daniel Farke’s side put on a dazzling display in their penultimate match, dispatching high-flying Bristol City 4-0 at Elland Road. Gnonto scored Leeds’ second with a clinical finish that all but ended Bristol’s hopes of a comeback. The Italian’s goal followed a brilliant team move initiated by Joel Piroe, who also created the opener for Ao Tanaka with a sublime assist.
Gnonto, who also scored in the previous 6-0 win over Stoke City, celebrated on Instagram with photos from the match. Fellow professionals were quick to react—former Leeds wonderkid Archie Gray and Premier League midfielder Kalvin Phillips both liked the post, while Yannick Bolasie and Largie Ramazani added supportive comments.
Despite a summer of speculation linking him to Everton and even clubs in Saudi Arabia, Gnonto stayed put after a rocky start to the 2023–24 campaign, which included a failed push to leave the club. Since then, he’s committed his future to Leeds with a new contract running through 2028.
While manager Daniel Farke is still evaluating whether the 21-year-old can deliver week in and week out at the Premier League level, Gnonto’s recent form provides timely encouragement. With a crucial transfer window on the horizon, Leeds will be glad to have a resurgent and committed Gnonto as part of their top-flight squad.
