AliousTottenham Hotspur defender Pedro Porro has described the club’s current Premier League campaign as a “disaster”, admitting the squad has struggled to cope with the demands of the season.
The Spanish full-back made the remarks during an appearance on El Larguero, as reported by Cadena SER.
Spurs, now managed by Igor Tudor, are currently sitting 16th in the league table and only one point above the relegation zone. Victories for rivals such as West Ham United over Fulham and a draw for Nottingham Forest against Manchester City have increased the pressure on the North London side.
Porro pointed to the club’s injury problems as a major factor behind their struggles, noting that the available lineup often looks very thin. He also suggested that the club needs a stronger long-term project if they want to compete consistently across multiple competitions.
European contrast
Despite their poor domestic form, Tottenham have performed much better in Europe. The club finished fourth in the league phase of the UEFA Champions League earlier in the season, earning automatic qualification for the round of 16.
Their next challenge in the competition will come against Atletico Madrid. With Spurs simultaneously battling to avoid relegation in the Premier League, there is uncertainty over how the team will balance both competitions.
Porro expects a tough contest but remains encouraged by the team’s European performances, which have been far more positive than their league results.
Injury crisis and poor form
Tottenham are currently enduring one of the worst runs in the division. They have yet to record a league victory in the current calendar year and sit bottom of the form table across the last six matches, while also going ten league games without a win.
A major reason behind the slump has been a severe injury and suspension crisis, with as many as ten first-team players unavailable at one point — the highest number in the league. Porro acknowledged that the squad depth simply has not been enough to compete effectively across four competitions.
Even so, he pointed out that Tottenham have still shown resilience in the Champions League, especially at home, and believes the upcoming clashes with Atletico Madrid will be intense and closely fought.
