“Means Everything to Me” – Patrick Roberts Vows to Complete Sunderland’s Premier League Dream Ahead of Play-Off Clash
Patrick Roberts has set his sights firmly on leading Sunderland back to the Premier League as they gear up for a crucial play-off showdown against Coventry City. The former Manchester City winger, now one of the more experienced members of the squad, reflected on his journey at the club and the deep connection he’s formed since arriving over three years ago.
Speaking to BBC Radio Newcastle, Roberts admitted he wasn’t sure what the future held when he first signed for Sunderland. Initially on a short-term deal, his performances quickly earned him extended stays — something he says he’ll always be thankful for. “I was at a point in my career where I needed a lifeline, and Sunderland gave me that,” he said. “It was only supposed to be six months, but it turned into something more. I’ve been lucky to call this club home and I’ve enjoyed every moment of it.”
Having helped the Black Cats escape League One, Roberts now hopes to finish the mission he started — with promotion to the top flight. “I said from the start that the goal was to get to the Premier League. That hasn’t changed. We’ve already proven we can come through tough situations. This next step is even harder, but it would mean the world to do it with this group.”
Despite ending the regular season on a disappointing run of results, Roberts is adamant that morale in the camp remains strong. He believes the squad’s time together in Portugal helped regroup and refocus ahead of the high-stakes fixtures to come. “From the outside, it might look worrying, but behind the scenes it’s been positive. The hunger to win has been there from day one. Sometimes late-season dips happen when teams secure their place early — but that hunger hasn’t faded.”
The 27-year-old also acknowledged that while some teammates are experiencing play-off football for the first time, he feels ready to lead by example. “You can’t let the moment overwhelm you. It’s just another game of football. The atmosphere will be intense, but we’ve got the talent and mentality to get through it.”
Roberts also offered praise for head coach Régis Le Bris, who joined the club last summer. “He’s been clear in his philosophy from day one and has stuck to his principles. He’s approachable and always up for discussions. This is his first season managing in England, and he’s adapted incredibly well. I trust he’ll have us fully prepared for what’s to come.”
With promotion now within touching distance, Roberts knows the magnitude of the challenge — but also the reward. “It’s been a long journey, but I believe we can finish it the way we always dreamed.”
