AliousMatheus Cunha Backed to Shine Under Eddie Howe if Newcastle Make £80m+ Move
Former Newcastle United winger Chris Waddle believes Matheus Cunha would be a major success at St James’ Park if he were to join from Wolves this summer.
Speaking exclusively to *Football Insider*, Waddle praised Cunha as a highly gifted and dynamic forward who, despite his fiery temperament, could flourish in Eddie Howe’s attacking setup.
Cunha has been one of Wolves’ standout performers this season, often lifting the team with moments of brilliance and decisive goals.
While primarily used as a supporting attacker, he’s occasionally mistaken for a central striker due to his goal output. His skill set, however, is best suited to a more fluid role behind a traditional No. 9 or as a left-sided forward.
Despite some on-pitch controversies—such as grabbing an Ipswich staff member’s glasses and receiving a red card for headbutting Milos Kerkez—the 25-year-old Brazilian’s passion and competitive edge have earned admiration.
Waddle compared Cunha’s emotional style to that of Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes, noting that it stems from his desire to excel and occasional frustration with teammates not matching his intensity.
Newcastle are monitoring Cunha as they weigh up their attacking options, especially amid speculation around Alexander Isak’s future and interest from Liverpool.
But bringing Cunha in could require a tactical rethink by Howe, who typically favors a 4-3-3 formation. The Brazilian could operate either behind the striker or out wide, offering flexibility and creativity in attack.
However, with Cunha potentially commanding a transfer fee between £80–100 million, Newcastle’s compliance with the Premier League’s financial regulations may force them to offload players before making such a move.
Waddle acknowledged this challenge but insisted that Cunha would thrive in the Magpies’ system, calling him an ideal addition for a club pushing for top-tier success.
“There’ll be no shortage of interest,” said Waddle.
“He’s got the talent to shine at the highest level, and Newcastle’s style would suit him perfectly. If the funds are there, he’s a top-tier signing waiting to happen.”
