Dan Neil has paid a glowing tribute to Chris Mepham, calling the Bournemouth loanee an unsung hero whose influence has been instrumental in Sunderland’s promotion push—both on the field and behind the scenes.
While Mepham played a prominent role in Sunderland’s Championship campaign under head coach Regis Le Bris—starting 37 of the club’s 46 league matches—he was left out of the starting XI for the play-offs following the return of Dan Ballard from injury. It was a bold decision by Le Bris, but it ultimately paid dividends, with Ballard delivering a defensive masterclass and scoring the decisive goal in extra time against Coventry City to send the Black Cats to Wembley.
Neil acknowledged the tactical rationale behind the switch, calling Ballard “arguably the best centre-half in the Championship when fit,” citing his pace, strength, leadership, and composure on the ball. But Neil also made a point to praise Mepham’s remarkable professionalism and team-first mentality, especially after losing his starting spot for the season’s biggest fixtures.
“Chris Mepham deserves massive credit,” Neil said. “He’s been a rock for us all season, not just on the pitch but in the dressing room too. What people don’t see is how much he’s contributed off the pitch—he’s kept the squad connected and driven.”
Neil went on to describe Mepham’s positive presence, noting that his experience and attitude have helped keep spirits high. “It must’ve been devastating for him to be dropped at such a crucial time, but he’s never let it show. He’s backed the lads all the way, offered guidance, and stayed fully engaged.”
According to Neil, Mepham embodies the team ethos that has propelled Sunderland within touching distance of the Premier League. “We’ve talked a lot in the dressing room about how it’s not just about the starting XI. It’s the substitutes, the unused players, the staff—everyone matters. And Chris is the perfect example of that.”
With Mepham’s loan spell nearing its end and his Bournemouth future uncertain—the Cherries reportedly have the option to extend his contract—his long-term status remains unresolved. But regardless of what lies ahead, Neil insists Mepham’s impact this season has been immense.
“He’s just a brilliant guy,” Neil added. “He’s always got a joke, runs quiz nights on away trips, plays cards with the lads—it’s those little things that help build team spirit. Since day one, he’s been top class, in every way.”
