As Sunderland gear up for a decisive clash against Sheffield United in the Championship play-off final, manager Régis Le Bris has reflected on the season’s journey — one that began with a bold vision and unwavering belief.
Taking the reins ahead of a challenging campaign, Le Bris wasted no time instilling purpose in his squad. In his very first meeting with the players, he asked them to define their season’s goal. The response was clear and ambitious: promotion. Despite finishing 16th the previous season, the players’ conviction impressed Le Bris, who saw not just ambition, but the potential to achieve it.
He observed early on that while Sunderland possessed flair, they lacked consistency. However, he believed that with the right methodology and work ethic, this could be corrected. Over the course of a long and grueling season, that belief bore fruit. The Black Cats didn’t win many games easily, but their ability to grind out results and endure hardship made them stronger.
Le Bris emphasized that Sunderland’s strength goes beyond tactics or talent — it’s their collective mindset and emotional resilience that have brought them to the brink of promotion. “You can be 17 and ready or 30 and not able to handle the pressure,” he said, highlighting the maturity and connection within the squad.
Though Sheffield United are the favourites, with Premier League pedigree and a deeper squad, Le Bris remains undeterred. His team have proven time and again that they can compete with the Championship’s elite — from their opening game against Burnley to strong performances versus Middlesbrough and Leeds.
Following the emotional semi-final victory over Coventry City, Le Bris allowed his players brief respite before returning to training with full focus. Calm and composed ahead of Wembley, the Sunderland boss is confident in their preparation. “We’ll stick to our identity and play our game,” he said.
