Sunderland Set to Shine Red and White as City Rallies Behind Wembley Dream

Sunderland’s most iconic landmarks will be glowing in club colours this weekend as the city throws its full support behind Sunderland AFC ahead of their high-stakes Championship play-off final against Sheffield United at Wembley.

From dusk till dawn on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (May 23–25), key city features including the Northern Spire Bridge, Keel Square, High Street West, Fulwell Mill, Hylton Castle, and the Beacon of Light will be lit in bold red and white—symbols of the city’s passion and pride.

In addition, drivers across Sunderland are greeted with messages of encouragement flashing across the city’s Variable Message Signs, with fan-favourite slogans like “Ha’way the Lads” spreading the spirit of unity and anticipation.

Leader of Sunderland City Council, Councillor Michael Mordey—who will be at Wembley for the match—shared a heartfelt message: “I want to wish the lads the best of luck and all our travelling supporters a safe trip down to London—and hopefully an even more joyful journey back home.”

Reflecting on the club’s success in reaching the play-offs, Cllr Mordey said the achievement reflects the resilience and talent of the team and the spirit of the city. “It’s a proud moment for Sunderland. We’re all hoping this becomes the next glorious chapter in our city’s proud football legacy.”

He added: “Whether you’re watching from Wembley, a local pub, Keel Square, or your own living room, this is a moment for all of us to remember. We believe in the team, and we believe promotion is within reach. Ha’way the Lads!”

A win on Saturday would secure Sunderland’s return to the Premier League after eight long years—a milestone the city is fully ready to celebrate.
