The experienced England midfielder, who joined Ajax after an ill-fated spell in Saudi Arabia, may be seeking a fresh start following the departure of manager Francesco Farioli — a key supporter of Henderson’s role at the Dutch club.
According to senior *De Telegraaf* journalist Mike Verweij, Ajax’s desire to offload Henderson’s salary was a sticking point between club officials and Farioli. Now that the manager has left, Henderson’s exit looks increasingly likely.
Two potential destinations are being touted: a return to former club Sunderland, who just secured promotion back to the Premier League, or a possible reunion with Steven Gerrard at Rangers — should the Ibrox club name him as their next boss. A player-coach role under Gerrard has been floated, making Rangers a tempting option for the 33-year-old.
“He’s being linked to Rangers, where Gerrard could take over and wants to bring him in,” Verweij told *Voetbal Zone*. “But Sunderland, his former club, is also an option — and he didn’t attend their match by chance. With Ajax wanting to cut costs and Henderson losing his main supporter, the door is open for a move to either club.”
