Prominent Rangers shareholder Dave King has publicly endorsed Steven Gerrard as the ideal candidate to lead the club forward, insisting the Liverpool icon has “unfinished business” at Ibrox.
In an interview with *The Rangers Review*, King said he would be shocked if club officials haven’t already initiated talks with Gerrard, describing the former manager as the “obvious” and “least risky” option to take over the vacant managerial position this summer.
King, who played a key role in Gerrard’s original appointment in 2018, believes the timing is right for a reunion. According to him, Gerrard’s departure in 2021 wasn’t due to dissatisfaction but rather circumstantial, as the team was leading the league and he was eager to defend the title he had won the season before.
“He left at a time he didn’t want to. That’s a fact,” King stated. “He wanted to see through the title defence, and I genuinely believe he would’ve succeeded.”
Now that Gerrard is no longer managing in Saudi Arabia following his exit from Al Ettifaq, King believes a return to Scotland would reignite the former boss’s passion for the long-term project of restoring Rangers’ dominance.
“This isn’t just about winning one title,” King emphasized. “It’s about building a legacy and making Rangers the undisputed top team in Scotland again. Steven would be perfect for leading that kind of sustained transformation.”
While names like Russell Martin and Davide Ancelotti have also surfaced in connection with the managerial vacancy, King remains firm in his belief that Gerrard’s experience and familiarity with the club make him the standout choice—if contractual and personal details can be ironed out.
“Steven still has strong ties to Liverpool, and Glasgow is only a short distance away. That makes things more feasible compared to if he were based overseas,” King noted. “If the logistics and any remaining contract obligations can be resolved, Gerrard is by far the most stable and compelling option available.”
