Brighton boss Fabian Hürzeler has praised the rapid development of Diego Gómez, describing the £12 million January signing as a player whose best days are still ahead of him.
The 22-year-old Paraguayan midfielder joined Brighton from Inter Miami midway through the season on a four-year contract, and despite limited starts, he has made a strong impression with a series of promising displays. In total, Gómez featured in 16 matches during the campaign, showing glimpses of his flair and physicality — traits that Brighton believe will only become more refined with time.
His standout moment came on the final day of the Premier League season, when he capped off Brighton’s dominant 4-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur with a spectacular long-range strike deep into stoppage time — his first goal for the club, and a sign of what he’s capable of.
Hürzeler was full of praise for Gómez’s attitude and swift adjustment to life in English football. “He has gone through an impressive phase of personal and professional growth,” the Brighton manager said. “What’s been remarkable is how quickly he’s acclimatised to the pace and demands of the Premier League, not just in footballing terms, but culturally as well. That’s not easy, and it speaks volumes about his mentality.”
The Brighton boss continued: “He deserves significant credit from us. He’s earned our trust, and I’m confident he’ll keep evolving — learning the language, embedding himself further within the squad, and maturing into a crucial player for us.”
Though Gómez has largely been used off the bench since arriving at the Amex, next season presents a golden opportunity for the young South American to stake a claim for a regular starting role. With Brighton entering a new chapter under Hürzeler, the midfielder is expected to play a more prominent part as the club continues its upward trajectory in English football.
Before then, Gómez will join forces with fellow Seagulls player Julio Enciso as they head off for international duty with Paraguay in their upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Uruguay and Brazil in June. The pair’s involvement on the international stage adds further excitement around Brighton’s growing South American contingent — and strengthens the belief that Diego Gómez is a star in the making.
