Wolverhampton Wanderers are on the verge of making their first major move of the summer transfer window, with a deal for young attacking midfielder Fer Lopez reportedly nearing completion.
Following the £62.5 million sale of Matheus Cunha to Manchester United and the departure of Pablo Sarabia on a free transfer, Wolves have been actively seeking a fresh creative spark in their frontline. The Midlands club has now zeroed in on 20-year-old Lopez, who has impressed in Spain’s top flight and is tipped to take up the number 10 role in Vitor Pereira’s 3-4-2-1 formation.
According to renowned transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, Wolves have nearly finalised a verbal agreement with all parties involved. The player himself is said to have given the green light to the switch, with the Premier League side ready to pay around €20 million (£17 million) — a significant chunk of the initial payment received from Manchester United for Cunha.
Lopez, who would join fellow former teammate Jorgen Strand Larsen in England, is expected to officially become Wolves’ first reinforcement of a potentially busy window at Molineux.
While the incoming funds will help cushion the loss, Celta boss Claudio Giráldez will no doubt feel the departure of a rising talent who featured regularly during the 2024/25 campaign. Lopez made 17 appearances in La Liga, scoring twice — including a goal against Villarreal late in the season — and played a full match at the Santiago Bernabéu in a narrow 3-2 defeat to Real Madrid.
The move, however, comes as little surprise to those familiar with the transfer landscape, given Lopez’s ties to influential agent Jorge Mendes — a figure well acquainted with Wolves and their recruitment strategy.
If all goes smoothly, Lopez will soon be unveiled as the first piece in Wolves’ summer rebuild, aimed at injecting youth and creativity into their attacking ranks.
