Leeds United are actively exploring options to move on midfielder Sam Greenwood this summer, with both Leicester City and Sunderland reportedly interested in securing the 23-year-old’s signature. The Whites are facing the challenge of maintaining Premier League financial stability after narrowly missing promotion, and that means trimming the wage bill by parting ways with fringe players.
Greenwood, once viewed as a promising prospect, spent the past two seasons on loan at Middlesbrough and Preston North End, but neither club opted to trigger their option to buy. His eye-catching free-kick goal against Leicester while on Teesside clearly left an impression, with the Foxes—now preparing for life back in the Championship under Ruud van Nistelrooy—said to be considering a move.
Sunderland are also monitoring Greenwood’s situation. A product of their academy before moving to Arsenal and later Leeds in 2020, a return to Wearside would mark a full-circle moment. However, a move to the Premier League with Sunderland might raise eyebrows, given Greenwood’s inconsistent loan spells and current readiness.
Leeds are reportedly demanding a fee between £3m and £4m for Greenwood, who signed an improved contract in 2022 that runs until 2026. Along with Joe Gelhardt and Darko Gyabi, Greenwood has been deemed surplus to manager Daniel Farke’s plans.
Freeing up Greenwood’s wages is a key objective for Leeds. His contract, like Gelhardt’s, is believed to be on the higher end for a player who no longer features prominently. While a Championship switch appears the logical next step, any deal will depend on whether a suitor is willing to meet Leeds’ valuation and take on the financial commitment.
With Greenwood’s time at Elland Road nearing its end, Leeds will be eager to complete a deal quickly—particularly one that relieves the wage burden and brings in a decent return for a player once tipped for the top.
