Cyriel Dessers may find himself packing his bags at Rangers just as quickly as he’s unpacked them, with reports indicating that the striker could be headed for the exit door only days after returning for pre-season. Despite finishing last season as the Scottish Premiership’s top scorer with 18 goals and playing a central role in Rangers’ campaign, Dessers’ long-term future at Ibrox appears increasingly uncertain.
The Nigerian forward, who has drawn both praise and criticism during his time in Glasgow—particularly for his sometimes inconsistent finishing—remains a prime target for Greek side AEK Athens. Their pursuit of Dessers has been ongoing, and although no deal has yet been struck, reports suggest Rangers may be willing to offload him for a fee in the region of £4 million.
With pre-season training scheduled to begin on Monday, 23 June, Dessers is expected back at the Auchenhowie training ground—but his stay could be short-lived. Sky Sports’ Sahil Jaidka recently confirmed that AEK are continuing their push for a deal, which may be concluded sooner rather than later.
This potential departure comes at a precarious time for Rangers, who are entering a pivotal summer under new manager Russell Martin. The club must quickly reinforce the squad ahead of a critical Champions League qualifier in early July. The timing of Dessers’ likely exit, therefore, adds an extra layer of urgency for the Rangers board and new sporting director Kevin Thelwell, who may need to line up a replacement striker in rapid fashion.
Should negotiations with AEK drag on, Rangers might be forced to hold onto Dessers until later in the transfer window to avoid being short-handed for what promises to be a make-or-break European campaign.
