‘Excellent’ Progress but More Sales Likely – Brighton Chairman Tony Bloom Speaks on £70m Spend, Transfer Strategy, and Player Exits
Brighton & Hove Albion chairman Tony Bloom has confirmed the club is unlikely to make many more signings this summer following an already active window that has seen over £70 million spent on new arrivals.
Speaking while attending the Ascot races, Bloom acknowledged Brighton’s transfer activity but suggested the bulk of incoming business is done. “We’ve already been involved in the window and I don’t think there’ll be a huge amount more happening,” he said in an interview with ITV Racing.
Big Summer Buys Completed Early
The Seagulls have already brought in a quartet of promising players. Greek forwards Charalampos Kostoulas (£30m) and Stefanos Tzimas (£22m) headline the additions, joined by Diego Coppola, a highly rated Italian international centre-back who signed for around £10m. Brighton also completed a deal for Tommy Watson from Sunderland for another £10m, rounding off a significant outlay early in the window.
Missed Europe, but Expectations Are High
Reflecting on last season’s campaign, where Brighton finished 8th in the Premier League and just missed out on European qualification, Bloom admitted there was some frustration among supporters—but he remains upbeat. “It’s a testament to how well we’ve performed that many fans were disappointed with eighth,” he noted. “We were close to Europe, and with our young players getting more experience, we’re optimistic for next season.”
Outgoings on the Horizon
While Brighton may not sign much more, they are preparing for several possible departures.
* Joao Pedro, signed from Watford for £30m in 2023, is attracting significant interest—particularly from Newcastle United, who can offer Champions League football. Brighton are said to value the Brazilian at around £60m and believe they can double their investment. Pedro, who is under contract until 2028, is reportedly open to a move to a London-based club, with Arsenal and Tottenham both monitoring the situation.
* Pervis Estupiñán has hinted he may leave this summer. The Ecuadorian left-back revealed he has “freedom” to explore his options, and Manchester United are reportedly considering a move. Brighton value the 27-year-old at around £30m. He is under contract until 2027.
* Igor Julio, the Brazilian centre-back signed from Fiorentina last summer for £15m, has openly said he doesn’t expect to complete his Brighton contract, also expiring in 2027. A move away seems likely, with Albion aiming to recoup most of their original fee.
* Julio Enciso, the Paraguayan attacking midfielder, is also weighing his future. His agent recently hinted that the 20-year-old might need a “new environment,” with FC Porto and Inter Milan both reportedly interested.
Balanced Strategy Moving Forward
After a record-breaking £200m transfer spree last summer and another sizeable investment this year, Brighton are showing signs of focusing on squad balance and sustainability. Bloom’s comments reflect a strategic pause in spending while still allowing for natural churn as players pursue opportunities elsewhere.
With the Seagulls continuing to build a squad full of young, high-potential talent while staying financially disciplined, the club remains committed to developing stars—both on the pitch and in the transfer market.
