Matija Frigan, a former £12.6 million Sunderland transfer target, has openly expressed his admiration for Rangers, describing a move to the Scottish Premiership as a “perfect” match for his style of play. The 22-year-old Croatian striker, who currently plies his trade with KVC Westerlo in Belgium, enjoyed a standout 2023/24 season, netting 14 goals and recording four assists across all competitions.
Frigan had caught Sunderland’s attention during the January transfer window, with the club reportedly exploring a loan deal that included a £12.6 million option to buy. That move, however, was blocked by Westerlo, who had already allowed other players to leave during the same window. Frigan’s current valuation is around £6.5 million, and interest in him has reignited ahead of the summer window—this time from Rangers and Bundesliga outfit Hamburg.
During a recent interview while in Rijeka, his hometown in Croatia, Frigan acknowledged the speculation, saying the physical and fast-paced nature of the Scottish Premiership would suit him well. “That style of league would suit me. I think I’m a player for that type of football,” he noted. However, he was quick to add that his future is yet to be decided and remains in the hands of his representatives. “We’ll weigh everything up and choose the best option,” he said.
Although Frigan remains under contract at Westerlo and is not rushing a decision, he is clearly open to new challenges. “I’m not saying I don’t enjoy Belgium, but a change of environment is always good,” he added, expressing satisfaction with the progress he has made, especially in terms of physical development during his time in Belgian football.
On Sunderland’s previous interest, Frigan confirmed there was truth to the January links. In an interview with Croatian outlet *Germanijak*, he said: “I think it was serious… I liked the idea, but when it didn’t go through, I put it out of my mind the next morning.” Though the Black Cats’ move never materialised, Rangers may now be in pole position to sign the rising forward, who insists he is waiting for the most concrete and suitable offer before making a decision.
