Issame Charai has broken his silence on his departure from Rangers, describing it as a “respectful” and mutually agreed decision following the managerial shake-up at Ibrox.
The Moroccan coach joined the Scottish giants under Philippe Clement earlier this year but departed after Russell Martin’s appointment brought about a restructuring of the backroom staff. With Martin arriving alongside assistant Matt Gill, Charai saw the writing on the wall.
In a candid interview, Charai revealed that the decision to leave was based on open and honest discussions with both Martin and director of football operations Kevin Muscat. He said they mutually concluded that his role overlapped too much with Gill’s, prompting Charai to seek opportunities elsewhere. That decision quickly paid off, as his phone began ringing with offers — culminating in him taking the head coach job at Belgian Pro League side Westerlo.
Charai praised the professionalism of the discussions around his exit, highlighting that the tone remained constructive throughout. He emphasized that he was not pushed out but chose to step aside early to pursue a new challenge, which allowed Rangers to move forward with clarity as well.
Reflecting on his time at the club, Charai expressed sympathy for his former boss Philippe Clement, arguing that the Belgian was never truly given a fair chance. He noted that the environment Clement operated in was far from ideal — with financial uncertainty, delayed executive appointments, and mounting pressure after a loss to Queen’s Park.
Charai believes the criticism Clement faced became personal rather than performance-based and emphasized that many of the same problems still exist at the club. He credited Clement and recruitment chief Nils Koppen for their dedication during a difficult period, insisting they worked tirelessly under challenging circumstances.
He also disclosed that after Clement’s exit, he was asked to stay and help ease the transition — a request he honoured — but ultimately felt that moving on was best for everyone involved.
Looking forward, Charai stressed that what Rangers now need most is stability. He backed Russell Martin and Kevin Muscat to provide that direction, as long as they are given the time and support to implement their vision.
Charai concluded with a nod to the immense pressure surrounding Rangers, particularly with the fierce rivalry against Celtic always looming. Despite leaving, he holds no bitterness and hopes the new era at Ibrox is given room to grow.
