Despite his brief stint at Luton, Aasgaard is now being lined up for a fresh start north of the border. Luton, who suffered back-to-back relegations and now find themselves in League One, are open to selling the versatile midfielder—especially as they face growing financial pressures and hope to recoup a solid profit from his sale.
The move is also being influenced by Aasgaard’s international ambitions. Norway boss Ståle Solbakken recently warned that playing in England’s third tier could jeopardize Aasgaard’s national team spot, casting doubt over his hopes of being part of the 2026 World Cup squad. “League One is too low a level,” Solbakken said, highlighting the need for Aasgaard to play at a higher standard to continue developing.
Aasgaard himself acknowledged the situation, telling Norwegian outlet VG that the upcoming World Cup is central to his decision-making. “It’s hard to say. Everyone is on vacation now. What I can say is that the World Cup in a year is a big goal for me.”
Born in Liverpool, Aasgaard began his football journey at Anfield before making 163 appearances and scoring 30 goals for Wigan Athletic. Known for his adaptability, he can play across midfield, out wide, and has even filled in up front—qualities that have made him a top target for Rangers boss Russell Martin.
