“I’m Told He’s Leaving!” – Insider Tips Southampton to Raid Sunderland for Star Keeper as Ramsdale Replacement Plan Emerges

Southampton are eyeing a surprise move for Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson this summer, as they prepare for life back in the Championship. The Saints are reportedly exploring their options following the uncertainty surrounding Aaron Ramsdale’s future, and Patterson has emerged as a prime target.

According to Football Insider, Sunderland’s shot-stopper is firmly on Southampton’s radar, with newly appointed manager Will Still keen to reinforce his squad. Patterson was instrumental in the Black Cats’ promotion push last season, playing in 42 regular-season matches and all three play-off ties, recording 14 clean sheets along the way.

However, despite his strong form, questions remain over whether the 25-year-old is fully ready to take on the demands of the Premier League. Former Manchester United and Blackburn Rovers scout Mick Brown revealed that Sunderland themselves may be unsure, stating:

> “Patterson is a top young goalkeeper with a strong reputation, but I have doubts, and it appears Sunderland do too. They’re already looking to bring in a more experienced keeper, which raises questions about Patterson’s role.”

This uncertainty has opened the door for clubs like Southampton to make a move. Brown added that Patterson has a release clause in his contract, and several clubs have been monitoring him closely. With Ramsdale expected to leave, Patterson is seen as a viable successor.

While Sunderland may not be eager to lose him, Patterson’s contract—running until 2028—does give them leverage in any negotiations. The final decision could hinge on the goalkeeper’s own willingness to drop back down to the Championship after achieving Premier League promotion.

Brown emphasized that the move would only happen if Patterson believes it aligns with his career goals:

> “He has experience winning promotion and could be a key figure in helping Southampton bounce back. But whether he takes that step down depends on if he sees a future at Sunderland or not.”

Having risen through Sunderland’s academy, Patterson has become a symbol of the club’s recent revival. But now, with Southampton circling and questions over his long-term role, the coming weeks could decide if he remains a part of Sunderland’s Premier League journey—or becomes a key pillar in Southampton’s own fight for top-flight return.
