Injury Blow Rocks Sunderland – Mundle Undergoes Surgery Weeks Before Season Kickoff, Leaving Le Bris’ Plans in Turmoil

Sunderland’s preparations for their Premier League return have been dealt a harsh blow, with winger Romaine Mundle confirming he has undergone surgery after suffering a hamstring setback.

Just a month before the league campaign begins, the 21-year-old took to Instagram to share the emotional news, describing himself as “devastated” by the recurrence of a long-standing issue. Mundle, who previously struggled with hamstring problems last season, aggravated the injury during the club’s training camp in Portugal last week.

Head coach Régis Le Bris confirmed that Mundle went under the knife on Saturday and won’t be fit in time for Sunderland’s opening fixture against West Ham. “It’s a shame,” Le Bris admitted. “He had a really strong pre-season and was ready. But we will support him throughout the recovery process.”

Mundle echoed that sentiment in his social media message, writing: “Words can’t fully describe the emotions. It’s hard to find positives in moments like these, but I’ll come back stronger. Surgery was a success, and my recovery starts now.”

Though the exact timeline for his return remains unclear, the setback means Le Bris will have to reshuffle his attacking options for the early weeks of the season. In Mundle’s absence, Sunderland drew 1-1 with Sevilla on Saturday night, with Enzo Le Fée scoring before the Spanish side equalised in stoppage time.

The game also marked debuts for several new faces—Simon Adingra, Noah Sadiki, and Chemsdine Talbi—who all featured from the start alongside fellow summer signing Habib Diarra.

Sunderland will continue their pre-season tour with a friendly against Sporting Lisbon on Monday. Meanwhile, the club is close to securing its seventh signing of the summer, with Armand Laurienté arriving in Portugal on Saturday to undergo his medical ahead of a £17.5 million switch from Sassuolo.
