Wolves triumph in Carabao Cup as Yerson Mosquera marks emotional return after 11 months out
There was plenty for Wolves supporters to smile about on Tuesday night at Molineux, not least their dramatic 3-2 Carabao Cup victory over West Ham United.
The evening’s immediate hero was Jorgen Strand Larsen, who struck twice in quick succession to turn the tie on its head and secure Wolves’ place in the third round.
The hope is that this comeback win will inject confidence ahead of Saturday’s Premier League clash with Everton.
But perhaps the biggest positive came in the form of Yerson Mosquera.
The Colombian defender returned to competitive action for the first time in almost a year, having endured a gruelling 11-month spell on the sidelines with ACL and MCL damage sustained early last season.
Against West Ham, Mosquera looked composed and physically assured, even if his use of the ball was occasionally loose when pushing forward.
Crucially, he came through unscathed and showed glimpses of the strength and defensive quality that Wolves hoped to see when they first brought him to the club.
After the game, the 22-year-old shared an emotional message with fans on Instagram:
*“11 months of hard work, fighting against difficulties after my injury and having the opportunity to play an official match at home again, with our people, is wonderful.
Thank God, to my family and everyone for the support and for giving me the confidence to return. Happy with today’s result, happy to advance to the next round.”*
Mosquera’s long road back has been riddled with setbacks. Since arriving at Molineux, he has lost large chunks of game time through injury and spent periods out on loan.
His determination to recover this time, however, has been clear, and Tuesday’s display did no harm to his hopes of forcing his way back into Gary O’Neil’s plans.
With Matt Doherty currently occupying the spot that Mosquera covets, competition for places will be fierce—especially with the imminent arrival of Ladislav Krejci to strengthen the defensive ranks.
Still, Mosquera’s hunger to make up for lost time could prove invaluable as Wolves look to build momentum.
For the fans, seeing him back on the pitch was every bit as uplifting as the win itself. And for Mosquera, the message was clear: he’s ready to fight for a starting place again
