Former Sunderland midfielder Alex Pritchard has finally broken his silence on his much-debated departure from the Stadium of Light, reassuring supporters that he holds no grudges and only fond memories of his time at the club.
Pritchard’s decision to leave in January split opinion among fans, sparking questions about the reasons behind his exit. Now, speaking in a Q\&A feature for Sunderland’s matchday programme, the 31-year-old offered his perspective, insisting the move was driven by career-related factors rather than bad blood.
“That was a private matter — purely career-based,” he explained. “Things don’t always work out as expected, but that’s football and that’s life. I’ve got no bad words to say about Sunderland. Whenever I get the chance, I’ll be back to watch them. I played my part in getting the club moving forward, and I’d love to see them continue to progress.”
During his three-year spell on Wearside, Pritchard made 115 appearances, playing a crucial role in helping Sunderland escape League One, stabilise in the Championship, and ultimately reclaim a spot in the Premier League. Reflecting on that journey, he admitted: “When I arrived, the club was in a difficult place. I thrived on that pressure — I wanted to prove myself again after a tough spell in my career, and Sunderland gave me that chance. I loved the dressing room, the supporters, and everything about the environment.”
Among his standout memories was the 2022 play-off final at Wembley, where he was named Player of the Match in Sunderland’s 2–0 win over Wycombe Wanderers. “The pressure was immense that day, but it was one of the greatest moments of my career,” he recalled. “That victory changed the club’s trajectory — without it, things could have been very different.”
Pritchard also praised the progress Sunderland have made under Régis Le Bris, noting the club’s upward momentum and unique fanbase. “Sunderland were always a sleeping giant,” he said. “You can’t be in League One and attract 40,000 every week. Now they’re back in the Premier League where they belong, and while challenges will come, the future looks bright.”
Despite the controversy surrounding his exit, Pritchard made it clear he remains proud of his contribution and grateful for the bond he built with the supporters.
