Alious“Fabian Hurzeler breaks silence on David Weir’s departure as Brighton unveil new transfer chief Jason Ayto”
Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler has spoken publicly for the first time about the sudden exit of long-serving technical director David Weir and the arrival of his successor, Jason Ayto.
Weir, who left the Seagulls last Friday, had been with the club for eight years in a variety of senior roles, taking over as technical director in May 2022 following Dan Ashworth’s move to Newcastle.
His departure marked the end of a long association with Brighton, during which he played a central role in helping shape the club’s recruitment and player development structure.
Paying tribute, Hurzeler praised Weir for his loyalty and support:
> “I’m very thankful that I had the opportunity to work with David. He was very loyal, always supportive, and brought in values that are crucial to this club — honesty, loyalty, and care for people.
He won’t be coming back, but we can carry those values forward.”
Taking Weir’s place is 40-year-old Jason Ayto, formerly of Arsenal and Norwich, who has been appointed as the new technical director.
In addition, Mike Cave has been promoted from assistant to full technical director in a wider reshuffle of Brighton’s football operations.
Hurzeler confirmed he has already spoken with Ayto, holding phone calls and meetings to give him insights into Brighton’s ongoing processes and challenges.
The 32-year-old manager stressed the importance of helping the new arrival settle quickly:
> “When Jason comes in, we will embrace him. We’ll be very open-minded and try to integrate him as quickly as possible.
That’s crucial for someone stepping into a role like this. My responsibility is to give him the best possible overview so he can hit the ground running.”
The timing of Ayto’s appointment is critical, with Brighton four matches into the new Premier League season and the January transfer window looming.
Key contract negotiations, including the future of defender Jan Paul van Hecke, and potential incoming deals will soon demand attention.
Hurzeler urged focus and stability as the club moves forward:
> “We have to put the outside noise away.
Our focus must be on the pitch and on the things we can influence. With Jason coming in, our responsibility as a club is to give him every chance to succeed and to create calmness around the team. Hopefully, our performances will convince everyone of our direction.”
As Brighton prepare to face Tottenham at the Amex Stadium this weekend, all eyes will be on how quickly Ayto integrates into the club’s structure — and whether Hurzeler’s push for calm and stability will translate into results on the pitch.
