Regis Le Bris Weighs Up Enzo Le Fee’s Role After Honest Sunderland Talks Ahead of Aston Villa Clash
Sunderland head coach Regis Le Bris has admitted that he is still working out how best to utilise French midfielder Enzo Le Fee after a summer of change in the Black Cats’ midfield.
Le Fee, who featured primarily off the left last season when Romain Mundle was sidelined, has also shown quality in a central playmaking role. During pre-season, Le Bris experimented with him as a deep-lying midfielder, but the arrival of Granit Xhaka has forced the Sunderland boss to reassess.
“We don’t yet know what his long-term position is,” Le Bris said. “We began pre-season with Noah, Habib and Enzo in midfield, but I don’t think we saw the best version of him there. When Granit joined, it was the right move to adjust. We had a tough but honest conversation about it. When the chance came to play him on the left, it suited him well as he’s been there before.”
Le Bris added that while Le Fee may have personal preferences, his priority remains helping the team win. The coach emphasised his belief in the player’s talent, leadership, and technical ability, noting that he continues to grow in importance within the squad.
Le Fee has impressed on the left, particularly in Sunderland’s win over Brentford, though a minor injury kept him out against Crystal Palace and allowed Simon Adingra to stake a claim. With Le Fee now back to full fitness and Mundle nearing a return, Le Bris faces a significant selection dilemma.
The Sunderland boss also highlighted the tactical contrasts between the two flanks, suggesting the right side is more structured while the left offers unpredictability. “We need different styles of play,” he explained. “If we can balance efficiency in possession with discipline out of possession, it could be a real strength for us.”
