Alious Pundits Back Nottingham Forest for First Win as Postecoglou Faces Key Striker Dilemma
Ange Postecoglou is tipped to finally secure his first victory as Nottingham Forest manager when his side face Sunderland at the City Ground this weekend.
Since taking charge, the Australian has endured a frustrating start with two draws and two defeats, all coming away from home. Now, with Forest back on home turf, pundits Chris Sutton and Paul Merson believe the Reds will end their winless run.
Forest came close to breaking their duck in midweek Europa League action against Real Betis, leading 2-1 in Seville until Antony – formerly of Manchester United – grabbed a late equaliser. That result has only increased pressure on Postecoglou to deliver in the Premier League.
Sutton, speaking to the BBC, admitted Sunderland have been impressive, particularly in last week’s draw with Aston Villa where they held their own despite going down to ten men. With Habib Diarra sidelined, he still expects them to be tough opposition but predicts Forest will edge it 2-1.
Merson echoed similar sentiments on Sportskeeda, praising Forest’s unlucky European performance and Sunderland’s strong start to the season. However, he also turned attention to the selection debate surrounding Igor Jesus.
The Brazilian forward has been in prolific form, netting four times in three games, though Merson personally believes Chris Wood’s physical presence might be more effective against Sunderland’s defence.
Despite that tactical dilemma, Merson is still backing Forest to finally get over the line, forecasting a narrow 1-0 victory.
For Postecoglou, Saturday could mark a turning point: a first win in charge, much-needed momentum, and clarity over which striker leads the line moving forward.
