Everton are lining up an ambitious move for Genk’s teenage sensation Konstantinos Karetsas as they look to strengthen their attacking options ahead of the January transfer window.
Backed by the Friedkin Group’s heavy investment of around £113m in the summer, David Moyes has already overseen significant changes to his squad. The Toffees have made a promising start to the campaign, but recent performances suggest further firepower will be required if they are to mount a genuine push for European qualification.
According to journalist Alan Nixon, Everton are one of several Premier League sides tracking Karetsas closely. Scouts from five English clubs, including Everton, Liverpool, Sunderland, Newcastle and Bournemouth, were spotted in the VIP section as the 17-year-old winger featured against Rangers in the Europa League. The highly rated Greek prospect is expected to leave Genk either in January or at the end of the season, with his price tag thought to exceed £20m.
Everton CEO Angus Kinnear has previously suggested the club would only move in the winter market if the right deal presented itself, and Karetsas fits the profile of a long-term investment. While Liverpool and Newcastle could potentially outmuscle the Toffees financially and offer Champions League football, Everton may be able to tempt the youngster with the promise of more regular first-team minutes.
The Friedkins have shown they are willing to bankroll big-money signings, so the fee itself is unlikely to be a stumbling block. Instead, the decisive factor may be whether Karetsas sees Everton as the best environment to develop his burgeoning career.
For now, Everton’s presence in the race for one of Europe’s brightest young prospects is a statement of intent, even if the battle to secure his signature is set to be fierce.
