Everton’s Premier League campaign has been steady so far, but manager David Moyes is already preparing to strengthen his attack when the January transfer window opens, with concerns mounting over Beto’s impact.
The Portuguese striker has managed just one goal in six league outings this season, leaving Moyes frustrated with his lack of sharpness in front of goal. Summer signing Thierno Barry has also struggled to make an impression from the bench, failing to open his account in Everton’s 1-1 draw with West Ham United on 29 September.
According to former Toffees CEO Keith Wyness, Moyes will be keen to recruit fresh firepower in January to ensure Everton do not lose momentum in their push for European places. With that in mind, three forwards have been tipped as potential targets:
#Ivan Romero (Levante, La Liga)
Everton’s willingness to scout La Liga talent was evident with Barry’s arrival, and Romero could be the next Spanish-based striker on their radar. The 24-year-old is in scintillating form, with only Kylian Mbappé (Real Madrid) and Julian Álvarez (Atletico Madrid) ahead of him in the La Liga scoring charts this season. Romero has already notched four goals in seven games, building on his prolific role in Levante’s promotion campaign last term.
#Josh Sargent (Norwich City, Championship)
The American forward has been one of the Championship’s most reliable scorers and is once again showing his quality in front of goal. After hitting 15 goals in 32 appearances last season, Sargent has started the current campaign with five goals in just eight matches. While he previously struggled in the Premier League with Norwich during 2021/22, his recent record suggests he could be ready for a second chance at the top level. Everton may also benefit from Sunderland’s failed deadline-day attempt to sign him, giving Moyes a clearer path.
#Tim Kleindienst (Borussia Monchengladbach, Bundesliga)**
The German striker is another possible option, despite currently recovering from a meniscus injury. Kleindienst proved his clinical ability last season, netting 16 goals in 31 Bundesliga matches.
With Monchengladbach battling poor form and staring at the threat of relegation, the 30-year-old could be tempted by a Premier League switch in January. His situation mirrors other Bundesliga exports who have flourished in England, highlighting the potential value of such a deal.
Everton remain in a strong position following their summer rebuild, but Moyes is determined to avoid being left short in attack. With Beto yet to find consistency and Barry still adapting, January may prove decisive in securing a striker capable of sustaining Everton’s momentum.
