Facundo Buonanotte has finally shed light on his surprise summer move to Chelsea, revealing why he couldn’t turn down the Premier League giants — even though things haven’t gone entirely to plan so far.
The 20-year-old Argentine was speaking to DSports Radio (via TyC Sports), reflecting on a whirlwind few months that saw him leave Brighton & Hove Albion for Stamford Bridge on a season-long loan deal.
Buonanotte had been expected to leave Brighton in search of more regular football after spending last season at Leicester City, but his move to France with Strasbourg collapsed due to injury concerns. Instead, he landed a surprise switch to Chelsea — a deal few had predicted and one that left fans and pundits scratching their heads.
The young winger’s opportunities have been limited under Enzo Maresca, with just 189 minutes of action across three appearances — including 90 minutes in a League Cup win over Lincoln City. With competition from elite talents like Cole Palmer, Estevão, and Pedro Neto, breaking into Chelsea’s starting XI was always going to be a tall order.
Still, Buonanotte insists he simply couldn’t refuse the call from a club of Chelsea’s stature.
“What you want is to play so you can be in the Argentine national team,” he explained. “But when a club as big as Chelsea comes along, you can’t say no. I wanted to take on this challenge to prove I’m up to it. I’m very happy and comfortable. The Premier League is the best league in the world — it never ceases to surprise you; something different happens every minute.”
Buonanotte also opened up about the strong Argentine connection within Chelsea’s squad, particularly his bond with Enzo Fernández, who reached out to him as soon as the transfer became official.
“He’s a fundamental pillar,” said Buonanotte. “I learn from him every day. He was the first to message me when my move was confirmed. I don’t need to say anything about what he’s like on the pitch — everyone knows he’s a wonderful player — but beyond that, he’s also a great person.”
While Buonanotte’s Chelsea adventure hasn’t yet lived up to expectations, his determination to prove himself on one of football’s biggest stages remains strong. For now, the Argentine starlet is focused on fighting for his place — and proving that saying “yes” to Chelsea was the right call after all.
