Leeds United’s worries have deepened as winger Dan James faces the prospect of a prolonged absence after suffering a suspected hamstring injury during Saturday’s clash with Manchester City. With a demanding run of five major matches lined up for the final stretch of 2025 — starting with Chelsea’s visit on Wednesday — the timing could not be worse for Daniel Farke’s side.
Despite showing encouraging signs in the second half of the Man City match, Leeds ultimately ended the game empty-handed once again. Their revival after halftime came largely due to Farke’s tactical reshuffle, withdrawing both wingers — James and Willy Gnonto — to adopt a back-five shape and push Dominic Calvert-Lewin closer to Lukas Nmecha. However, while the adjustment improved performance, James’s exit was forced by injury rather than strategy.
The Welsh international informed staff at halftime that he was experiencing hamstring problems, prompting his substitution. Farke later confirmed to BBC West Yorkshire Sport:
“Daniel James reported some hamstring injuries at half time so it could be that he has done his hamstring. We have to wait for further assessment… straight after the game it didn’t look too good. So it could be that he is out for a while.”
**Midfield uncertainty continues — Stach waiting on clearance**
Elsewhere, Leeds remain thin in midfield. Sean Longstaff has already been ruled out until January after a calf injury sustained against Aston Villa, leaving a gap in central stability. Meanwhile Anton Stach also missed the City match due to concussion protocol after taking a heavy hit from Emi Martinez. Stach hopes to return to training ahead of the Chelsea fixture, but his availability will only be confirmed when Farke addresses the media on Tuesday.
If Stach is cleared, his return would come as a major relief — especially with Ethan Ampadu dangerously close to suspension due to accumulated yellows.
