Evan Ferguson’s situation at Roma has become increasingly uncertain, and Brighton manager **Fabian Hurzeler has openly admitted that a January return for the young striker is a real possibility. Speaking to reporters, the Brighton boss wouldn’t rule out recalling Ferguson next month, saying only: “Let’s see when January comes.”
Ferguson has endured a difficult loan spell in Italy, netting just one goal in 13 appearances for Roma. According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Giallorossi are already weighing up the option of cutting the loan short so they can pursue a new centre-forward. Though Roma secured an option to buy Ferguson for €35 million at the end of the season, his performances so far have cast doubt on whether they will activate it.
During Friday’s press conference, Hurzeler revealed that young forward Stefanos Tzimas, who has scored three goals in 13 matches, has suffered a long-term knee injury. This prompted questions about whether Brighton might recall reinforcements—specifically Ferguson or Facundo Buonanotte—during the upcoming transfer window.
When asked directly about Ferguson, Hurzeler kept his options open:
“Let’s see when January comes—how we try to strengthen the team and what changes we want to make. Right now, we have two weeks to focus on the present. We can’t change anything at the moment, so we need to find solutions with the players we currently have. The squad is definitely strong enough to cope.”
