Brighton & Hove Albion are facing a significant decision as the January transfer window approaches, with talks reportedly already underway over the future of on-loan striker Evan Ferguson.
Brighton and Roma Begin Early Discussions
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, “initial contacts” have been made between Brighton and Roma regarding the possibility of Ferguson returning to the Amex next month. The Seagulls had loaned the 21-year-old to the Serie A giants in a deal containing a £40 million option to buy—a bold move given Brighton also offloaded Joao Pedro, Julio Enciso, Matt O’Riley, and Facundo Buonanotte during the same window.
However, the gamble has yet to pay off. Ferguson has struggled to establish himself in Italy, scoring only one goal in 10 league appearances, raising fresh uncertainty about whether Roma will even consider triggering the option.
Roma manager Gian Peiro has downplayed speculation, saying decisions will be assessed in January and could change “if he plays two or three high-quality games,” stressing that it is “too early” to make a final judgement.
Return to Brighton Not Straightforward
If Roma decide to cut the loan short, Ferguson may find it equally difficult to regain momentum back at Brighton. Manager Fabian Hurzeler has never fully viewed him as a guaranteed starter, and competition remains fierce.
Yet circumstances may shift in the striker’s favour. Greek prospect Stefanos Tzimas has suffered a serious injury that will keep him out **long term**, potentially opening a pathway for Ferguson to reclaim minutes.
