Everton are reportedly stepping up plans to secure a long-term replacement for club captain Seamus Coleman, with their scouting department identifying a standout Premier League performer as a leading candidate.
Despite turning 37, Coleman has continued to contribute on and off the pitch, earning widespread admiration for his durability and leadership. However, with the veteran defender approaching the end of his contract and set to become a free agent next summer, the Toffees are increasingly aware that a permanent solution at right-back can no longer be delayed.
When 2026 comes around, Everton are expected to restore Jake O’Brien to his natural role in central defence, leaving the right-back position in need of a specialist. Given Coleman’s service and legacy, failing to line up a successor would be seen as a major misstep under The Friedkin Group’s ownership.
An emotional farewell now seems inevitable, and there is a sense of symmetry in the fact that David Moyes — the manager who handed Coleman his Everton debut — could be the one to oversee his final appearances. Moyes has already spoken glowingly about his captain, making clear that Coleman’s value goes far beyond sentiment.
“You don’t keep players just for the sake of it,” Moyes explained earlier this year. “But if we had our way, we would try to keep Seamus around — definitely — whether on the pitch or in another role.”
While Coleman may yet remain involved behind the scenes, Everton are actively assessing their on-field options. According to Football Insider, the club are now targeting Leeds United defender Jayden Bogle after scouts were left impressed by his performances.
Bogle, 25, has enjoyed a strong campaign with Leeds, playing a key role as the club push to secure Premier League survival. His form has not gone unnoticed, and Everton are said to view him as a natural heir to Coleman ahead of next summer.
Leeds’ stance could prove decisive, but manager Daniel Farke has made no secret of his admiration for the right-back, previously describing him as an “unbelievable” professional with an outstanding attitude, defensive discipline and attacking output.
Statistically and stylistically, Bogle would represent an upgrade on O’Brien, who has filled in at right-back this season out of necessity rather than preference. With Moyes eager to take Everton forward, recruiting a specialist option on the right flank is shaping up to be a major priority once the transfer window opens.
If the Toffees are serious about building momentum, securing Coleman’s successor sooner rather than later may prove crucial.
