AliousGareth Bale has called on Tottenham Hotspur to loosen their spending policy in order to end years of inconsistency at the North London club.
Last season, manager Ange Postecoglou guided Spurs to victory in the UEFA Europa League, but the team still faced heavy criticism for their disappointing performances in the Premier League. This campaign has been even more difficult, with Tottenham now facing the possibility of a relegation fight.
Bale believes the club’s relatively modest wage structure compared to their rivals is part of the problem. He suggested that the modern transfer market requires significantly larger investments if clubs want to attract top-level talent.
According to the former Spurs star, signing a player for £50 million no longer guarantees elite quality, as the price of proven talent has risen dramatically. In many cases, clubs now have to spend closer to £100 million to secure players capable of making an immediate impact.
Bale also pointed out that Tottenham have often focused on signing young prospects with the hope they will eventually develop into top players. While that strategy worked in the past — including with Bale himself — he feels the club has now reached a stage where it should be targeting more established stars.
He argued that Tottenham already possess the infrastructure of a major club, with a world-class stadium, training facilities and a huge fanbase. In his view, the next step is to invest in bigger, proven players who can deliver success straight away.
Tottenham struggling despite managerial change
Spurs attempted to turn their season around by appointing Igor Tudor after the dismissal of Thomas Frank. However, Tudor’s start has been extremely difficult, with defeats in his first three matches against Arsenal F.C., Fulham F.C. and Crystal Palace F.C..
As a result, Tottenham have slipped to 16th place in the league table and are only one point above the relegation zone.
Speaking on The Overlap, Bale was asked why Spurs have fallen behind traditional rivals such as Arsenal F.C. and Manchester United F.C.. He suggested that the club’s cautious transfer policy is a major factor.
Bale urges Spurs to take bigger risks in the transfer market
Tottenham did invest in the squad during the January transfer window, spending £53 million on Conor Gallagher from Atlético Madrid. The club had also made several signings last summer, including Mathys Tel, Xavi Simons, Mohammed Kudus and Kevin Danso.
Among those arrivals, Simons was the most expensive, costing around £52 million.
However, Bale believes Tottenham must be willing to spend even more if they want to compete with the biggest clubs. He suggested the club may need to take financial risks in the transfer market to bring in established stars.
From a business perspective, Bale feels Tottenham have been reluctant to make those bold moves. In his opinion, the club’s biggest issue is the lack of proven signings who can deliver immediate results.
He contrasted this with clubs like Manchester United, who despite their own struggles, at least continue to attempt major signings in an effort to improve the team.
