Spurs endured a nightmare start in their Round of 16 clash, conceding three goals within the opening 15 minutes at the Wanda Metropolitano. Interim boss Igor Tudor had handed 22-year-old goalkeeper Kinský his European debut for the crucial encounter.
The decision failed to stem Atlético’s attacking momentum. Although Tottenham managed to respond with goals from Pedro Porro and Dominic Solanke, they still conceded twice more, ultimately suffering a damaging 5–2 defeat that leaves their Champions League hopes hanging by a thread.
In hindsight, dropping first-choice goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario for the inexperienced Kinský in such a high-stakes fixture appeared risky. Tottenham, who are also battling near the relegation zone in the Premier League, could ill afford another blow to their confidence. After just 17 minutes—and with the young keeper blamed for two of the early goals—Tudor decided to substitute him.
De Gea Shows Support for Kinský
Having experienced his own difficult moments in goal, De Gea quickly offered words of encouragement. The former Manchester United star endured a challenging end to his time at Old Trafford before leaving in 2023, only to revive his career with ACF Fiorentina.
Posting on X, the Spanish goalkeeper sympathised with Kinský’s situation, reminding fans how demanding the position can be. He wrote that only those who have played in goal truly understand how difficult the role is and urged the young keeper to keep his head up and move forward.
Former England and Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart echoed similar sentiments during his analysis on TNT Sports. While he expressed sympathy for Kinský, the panel also agreed that Vicario should likely have started the match.
Despite the disappointment, the young goalkeeper received encouragement from teammates and Atlético supporters as he returned to the bench—something that may help him recover from the tough debut.
Questions Over Tudor’s Decisions
Tudor’s choices continue to raise eyebrows within Tottenham’s struggling season. Since replacing Thomas Frank, the Croatian has yet to establish a consistent tactical identity, and results have failed to improve.
His team selections have also been questioned. Leaving experienced players such as defensive midfielder João Palhinha on the bench while experimenting with younger options has puzzled observers.
