According to sources cited by Football Insider, Tottenham Hotspur will assess whether to make Timo Werner’s loan move from RB Leipzig permanent at the conclusion of the current campaign.
The 28-year-old striker joined Spurs on loan in January and has made 14 appearances under manager Ange Postecoglou, contributing two goals and three assists. However, his season has been cut short due to a hamstring injury sustained in the recent clash against Arsenal.
While Tottenham hold an option to make Werner’s transfer permanent for a reported “decent fee,” Football Insider’s senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that the German forward has not done enough to warrant a permanent deal this summer.
O’Rourke stated that despite a promising start upon his return to London, having previously played for Chelsea, Werner’s inconsistent performances in recent times have diminished his chances of securing a permanent move to Spurs.
The North London club’s transfer policy prioritizes signing younger players under the age of 24, whom they can develop into top-tier talents, making a permanent deal for the 28-year-old Werner less attractive.
O’Rourke added that Tottenham’s summer transfer budget could also be impacted if they fail to secure a Champions League spot, a task made more challenging with England set to have only four Champions League places next season.
Ultimately, Spurs will evaluate Werner’s situation at the end of the campaign and make a final decision on whether to exercise their option to buy the striker outright or explore other transfer targets.
