Tottenham Hotspur are keeping close tabs on Middlesbrough’s highly-rated young midfielder Hayden Hackney as they aim to bolster their engine room options ahead of next season.
The 21-year-old Hackney, who has already racked up 69 appearances for Boro despite his tender age, is reportedly a long-term target for Spurs.
The North London club had him watched extensively during the first half of the 2023/24 campaign and were even considering making a move for him in the January transfer window before Hackney’s season was curtailed by injury.
However, Tottenham’s interest in the England U21 international has not waned.
They view the versatile Hackney, who can operate in defensive, central or attacking midfield roles, as an ideal fit for new manager Ange Postecoglou’s tactics which place an emphasis on multi-functional players.
Though he missed the final three months of the season, Hackney still made 28 appearances across all competitions for Middlesbrough, chipping in with two goals and two assists.
His impressive performances have clearly caught the eye of Spurs’ recruitment staff.
With midfield reinforcement a priority this summer, Tottenham could make their move to prise away one of Boro’s rising stars when the transfer window opens.
Hackney would provide energetic competition for Spurs’ current crop of midfielders.
