AliousTottenham Hotspur endured another difficult evening on Tuesday as they suffered a heavy 5–2 defeat to Atlético Madrid at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano.
Head coach Igor Tudor made a surprise decision before kickoff by starting young goalkeeper Antonín Kinský ahead of regular first-choice stopper Guglielmo Vicario. However, the gamble quickly turned sour.
Within the opening 17 minutes, Kinský committed two costly errors that helped Atlético race into a commanding 3–0 lead, with goals coming from Marcos Llorente, Antoine Griezmann and Julián Álvarez.
Speaking after the match, Tudor admitted the situation was far from ideal. He explained that the early mistakes forced him to substitute the goalkeeper after just 15 minutes, describing the encounter as a “strange” and unusual game where Tottenham effectively handed their opponents three goals.
Tudor replaced Kinský with Vicario shortly after the early goals, but the Italian was unable to stop Atlético’s momentum, conceding a fourth goal just minutes later.
When questioned about whether he had spoken with Kinský after the match, Tudor suggested it was not the right moment for lengthy discussions. The under-pressure manager admitted the team currently feels as though everything is going against them, adding that his focus must remain on working hard and helping the squad recover from the difficult period.
Tudor also described the chaotic opening stages as something he had rarely witnessed in his coaching career, calling it one of the strangest starts to a match he had seen in 15 years in football.
The decision to remove Kinský so quickly drew criticism from some observers. Former Manchester City and England national football team goalkeeper Joe Hart said he was shocked by the handling of the situation, admitting he felt deeply sorry for the young goalkeeper after such a difficult moment on the pitch.
