AliousPaul Robinson has warned that a points deduction could be highly detrimental to Leeds United if they fail to comply with Profit and Sustainability Rules.
Although Red Bull’s investment as minority shareholders has stabilized finances at Elland Road, Leeds still needs to raise funds through player sales to stay within PSR limits.
This may necessitate selling players like Crysencio Summerville, Archie Gray, and Wilfried Gnonto this summer, potentially leaving Daniel Farke with a reduced squad for the 2024/25 season.
Speaking to MOT Leeds News, Robinson stated, “This was inevitable with a Championship stay.
When a team remains in or is relegated to the Championship and the financial situation is strained, losing top players is always a risk.
The chairman has been transparent about needing to sell some players, which is understandable.
It’s about rebuilding amid financial losses, FFP, and PSR.
“Sheffield United will start the next Championship season with a two-point deduction.
We know how challenging the Championship is, and a points deduction is the last thing Leeds needs. They will have to sell players.
“There could be significant departures this summer, including Cody Drameh, Stuart Dallas moving to coaching, Ian Poveda, Joe Rodon potentially making a permanent move, Sam Byram, Shackleton, Jaidon Anthony on loan, Connor Roberts on loan, Luke Ayling possibly joining Middlesbrough, and uncertainty around Liam Cooper’s future.
Adding Gray, Gnonto, and Summerville to this mix means a major rebuilding job. Balancing the books and fielding a competitive squad for the Championship is crucial.”
Leeds United is striving to avoid PSR breaches this summer.
According to the Daily Mail, Leeds needed to raise over £100 million in player sales before the Championship play-off final, although Red Bull’s new investment will alter these figures.
Nonetheless, Farke is expected to use his previous Championship experience with Norwich City to lead Leeds back to the Premier League.
