AliousAccording to transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, Tottenham defender Djed Spence is in talks to join Genoa on a permanent transfer.
The 23-year-old spent the last six months on loan at the Italian club after a failed temporary spell at Leeds United in the Championship was cut short.
Spence joined Spurs from Middlesbrough in a £20 million deal in the summer of 2022, but he has made just six appearances for the club.
The arrival of Ange Postecoglou seemed to present a second chance for Spence, but he was swiftly isolated from pre-season training sessions.
Following the termination of his loan at Leeds, Tottenham quickly arranged for Spence to join Genoa on loan.
In 18 Serie A appearances for the Italian side, Spence impressed sufficiently for them to pursue a permanent transfer.
On Monday, it was revealed that Genoa have approached Tottenham to sign Spence on a permanent deal.
As per Romano, negotiations are ongoing, with the transfer fee likely to be a crucial factor in determining whether the deal goes through.
If an agreement is reached, a significant windfall could be on the cards for Spurs and Postecoglou.
Reflecting on his time at Tottenham, Spence acknowledged the difficulties he faced, stating, “This is football, I couldn’t explain the reasons. What’s certain is that when you don’t play, it’s difficult to demonstrate your value.”
With this update, Spence’s future at Tottenham appears bleak, as he looks to secure regular playing time elsewhere.
His potential departure would mark Tottenham’s first senior exit of the summer, following the loan return of Timo Werner from RB Leipzig.
