AliousStruggling Tottenham Hotspur appeared destined for a seventh consecutive defeat in all competitions after Dominik Szoboszlai fired Liverpool FC ahead with a stunning 30-yard free-kick in the 18th minute.
However, the reigning champions failed to press their advantage and paid the price for their missed chances. Richarlison punished some sloppy defending late on, grabbing a dramatic equaliser.
Both Andy Robertson and Virgil van Dijk were unable to deal with a long pass from Guglielmo Vicario, allowing Richarlison to run through and calmly finish from ten yards after being set up by Randal Kolo Muani.
Considering their difficult start under Igor Tudor and the absence of 13 first-team players due to injury and suspension, the result at Anfield will provide Spurs with a significant boost as they battle to avoid relegation.
The north London side will now hope this comeback marks a turning point ahead of their next Premier League match at home against fellow strugglers Nottingham Forest next weekend.
Speaking in the Sky Sports studio, Jamie Redknapp urged Tudor to continue using both Dominic Solanke and Richarlison together in attack after their impact at Anfield.
“Before the game I honestly didn’t give them a chance,” said the former Tottenham, Liverpool and England midfielder.
“I looked at the team and wondered how they could possibly get a result because recently they’ve lacked fight in every department.
“But now it becomes interesting. The club has stuck with the manager. After all the turmoil, another defeat today could have cost Igor Tudor his job.
“They’ve got two huge fixtures coming up — Atlético Madrid and Nottingham Forest at home. The question now is whether they can pick up enough points to escape the situation they’re in.
“He has decisions to make as well. Does he stick with the same centre-backs, or bring Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven back? Their defending recently hasn’t been great and discipline has also been an issue.
“But one thing I would definitely keep is the two strikers up front because they gave the team a real platform.”
Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane also praised Solanke and Richarlison, highlighting the way they gave Spurs a focal point in attack.
“They gave the team an outlet and Liverpool struggled to handle it,” Keane said.
“Spurs have often been accused of being a bit soft, but the physical presence of those two forwards made a huge difference. They offered strength, caused problems and gave the team something to build around.
“With the battles they face between now and the end of the season, that approach could be vital. The next league game against Nottingham Forest is massive.”
