AliousEverton’s former chief, Keith Wyness, has emphasized that the club must sell some star players this summer to address their profit and sustainability (PSR) issues.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park from 2004 to 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – noted that speculation around Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Jarrad Branthwaite leaving Everton has subsided after previous links to transfers.
Football Insider revealed last month that Everton must sell at least one of their key players before submitting their accounts at the end of June to balance the books.
However, efforts are underway to ensure Branthwaite remains at Goodison Park next season, with the club reportedly in talks with the 21-year-old defender.
Everton sales likely amid PSR concerns
Wyness insists Everton will need to offload players once the transfer window reopens, despite the club’s recent claims that no major departures are necessary.
He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “I have always felt sales are going to be inevitable at some stage.
They are going to have to balance the books.
“There have been some very bullish noises coming out from the club, saying ‘No, we don’t have a problem, we don’t have to sell’.
But then again, you would say that, wouldn’t you? That’s the case with any negotiation.
“I do think they are going to have to sell to resolve the PSR issue once and for all.
Who it’s going to be, that’s the £61million question.
“It’s certainly gone quiet around Dominic Calvert-Lewin to Newcastle and there is nothing really around Branthwaite’s move.
There is nobody there really that’s coming up in terms of being an active transaction.
“But there is no doubt there will be a lot of discussions behind the scenes.”
