AliousAccording to reports from France, Tottenham Hotspur have decided to part ways with Tanguy Ndombele by mutually terminating his contract this summer, allowing him to leave on a free transfer.
Ndombele joined Spurs from Lyon in 2019 for a club-record £55.4 million fee, but the 27-year-old midfielder failed to live up to expectations in North London over the past four seasons.
After struggling for form and playing time in his first two campaigns, Ndombele spent the second half of 2021/22 back on loan at Lyon. He then joined Napoli on loan last season, making 40 appearances as they won the Serie A title, though the Italian side opted against making the move permanent.
Ndombele spent 2022/23 on loan at Galatasaray, where he won another league title in Turkey despite limited game time, starting just four Super Lig matches due to fitness issues.
With a year still remaining on his lucrative £200,000-per-week Spurs contract he signed in 2019, French outlet FootMercato reports that Tottenham and Ndombele have now agreed to an “amicable” early termination to make him a free agent this summer.
Former Spurs managers Antonio Conte and Jose Mourinho had been publicly critical of Ndombele’s struggles to consistently harness his talent and work rate during their respective spells in charge.
Conte stated in 2021 that Ndombele needed to “work much more than others” to contribute to the team, while Mourinho lamented that the Frenchman’s “amazing talent” was undermined by him never “reaching the limits of effort and sacrifice.”
With Ndombele’s lucrative contract off the books, Tottenham can finally draw a line under their record but unsuccessful £55.4m investment as the midfielder departs to relaunch his career elsewhere as a free agent.
