Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly eyeing a £50 million move for Everton’s Amadou Onana as a potential replacement for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, who is widely expected to leave the club this summer.

Hojbjerg, a mainstay under previous Spurs managers, saw his playing time reduced under Ange Postecoglou last season, making just eight full Premier League starts out of 36 appearances. The 28-year-old Danish midfielder is now seeking more opportunities elsewhere, and reports suggest he is keen to follow Tanguy Ndombele’s footsteps out of the Tottenham exit door.

Having made 184 appearances for Spurs since his £20 million move from Southampton in 2020, contributing 10 goals and 16 assists, Hojbjerg’s four-year stint in North London appears to be nearing its end.

As a result, Tottenham’s recruitment team is actively searching for potential replacements, with a central midfielder being one of their main transfer priorities.

While Spurs remain in the mix to sign Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher, a player admired by Postecoglou, the uncertainty surrounding the England international’s willingness to join a rival club has prompted the exploration of alternative options.

One such option is Everton’s highly-rated 20-year-old midfielder Amadou Onana. According to journalist Ignazio Genuardi, Tottenham are interested in securing Onana’s services, with the Toffees slapping a £50 million price tag on the Belgian.

Onana, who made 30 Premier League appearances as a mainstay in Sean Dyche’s midfield last season, has been hailed as one of Europe’s brightest young talents by former Belgium manager Roberto Martinez.

“He’s a really exciting footballer. I know sometimes when we speak about players it’s very difficult to measure potential,” Martinez told Sky Sports. “We’re talking about a 20-year-old boy that is probably one of the most talented young players at that age in European football. That’s how excited we are in Belgium.

He’s already played in two major leagues in Germany and France, he joined Lille for a big fee and nothing is going to faze him to go into a new project after a big transfer fee.”

Martinez even drew comparisons between Onana and former Everton star Marouane Fellaini, praising the youngster’s physicality and presence on the pitch.

As Tottenham prepares for Hojbjerg’s potential departure, Onana’s acquisition could provide them with an exciting long-term prospect to bolster their midfield ranks.
