Igor Tudor has taken a bold step to address Tottenham Hotspur’s growing midfield problems by turning to academy talent ahead of the crucial Atletico Madrid showdown.
Tottenham managed to reignite a small spark of hope in the Premier League after grinding out a valuable point away to Liverpool F.C. on Sunday. The result has given Tudor something to build on as the north London club navigates the final months of a challenging campaign.
It has been a deeply disappointing season for Spurs supporters. While the club still has the second leg of their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie against Atletico Madrid approaching, few fans realistically expect Tottenham to overturn the three-goal deficit and reach the quarter-finals. As a result, the immediate focus has shifted firmly to Premier League survival and avoiding the threat of relegation.
Midfield Injury Crisis Deepens
Injuries continue to plague Tottenham across the squad. Despite missing key defenders such as Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero at Anfield, Spurs still managed to hold firm under Liverpool’s pressure. Both defenders could return in time for the crucial league meeting with relegation rivals Nottingham Forest F.C..
However, the situation in midfield remains far more concerning. Neither Dejan Kulusevski nor James Maddison are expected to recover from injuries sustained last year before the season concludes.
Matters worsened over the weekend when both Yves Bissouma and Conor Gallagher were ruled out. In their absence, Pape Matar Sarr and Archie Gray delivered impressive performances, but Tudor may still need additional options to navigate the demanding run-in.
Academy Prospect Steps Into the Spotlight
With as many as 13 first-team players sidelined against Liverpool, Tudor had little choice but to lean on the club’s academy system. The Croatian handed 19-year-old midfielder Callum Olusesi another opportunity, introducing him late in the game for just his second senior appearance.
Olusesi previously made his debut in the UEFA Europa League last season and had been an unused substitute in several Champions League fixtures this campaign. However, his brief cameo at Anfield offered a glimpse of his potential.
The youngster completed all eight of his attempted passes, registered two ball recoveries and produced three progressive carries during his short spell on the pitch. More importantly, he displayed composure and confidence on the ball as Tottenham pushed for a late equaliser.
Versatility Could Be Key
One of Olusesi’s greatest strengths is his versatility. The young midfielder is capable of operating in more advanced attacking roles but can also drop deeper, using his physicality and tidy passing to influence play from central areas.
That flexibility could prove invaluable in the final stretch of the season, particularly with Gallagher struggling to make a consistent impact since his reported £35 million arrival in January.
Talent scout Jacek Kulig has previously described Olusesi as part of a “special generation” of emerging talent at Tottenham. If given more opportunities, the academy product could provide the spark Spurs need during the most critical period of their campaign.
After playing a role in the club’s Europa League success last season, Olusesi appears to be growing in confidence at exactly the right moment — and he may yet become an unexpected difference-maker for Tottenham as they battle through the remainder of the season.
