Chelsea poised to join the race for Tottenham Hotspur target Jarrad Branthwaite
Tottenham Hotspur have been actively pursuing Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite this summer, amid Manchester United’s struggles to secure his services (h/t Daily Mail).
Everton’s financial woes and PSR compliance issues may force them to sell a key player, with Branthwaite or Amadou Onana likely candidates.
Tottenham and Manchester United are looking to exploit this situation to acquire one of the Premier League’s top defensive prospects at a reduced price.
Manchester United initially led the race for the 21-year-old England international, surpassing Spurs.
However, they reportedly withdrew after Everton was dissatisfied with their low offer, giving Spurs an opportunity to capitalize. Meanwhile, Chelsea have shown renewed interest in the promising defender.
A bidding war for Branthwaite?
Former Everton CEO Keith Wyness, on Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, suggested that Chelsea need defensive reinforcements following Thiago Silva’s departure and might consider Branthwaite.
With current options Levi Colwill, Wesley Fofana, Benoit Badiashile, and Axel Disasi at Stamford Bridge, Wyness remarked:
“With Thiago Silva going, they need to bring in another centre-half.
I thought they would’ve been in for Branthwaite; they may still come in later in the window. Chelsea certainly need more talent in the centre-back area.
They also haven’t solved their attacking issues. There’s no doubt they need more players.”
It remains to be seen if Chelsea will enter the race for the 21-year-old Tottenham target.
Meanwhile, Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy must decide whether to strengthen Spurs’ pursuit of the Three Lions star this summer, as the club has multiple positions to address in the transfer window.
