The Belgian Football Association (FA) found itself in hot water after sharing a controversial video featuring midfielder Amadou Onana.
In the clip, Onana participated in a chant with Belgian comedian Pablo Andres that suggested targeting French star Kylian Mbappe’s shins during their upcoming Euro 2024 match.
Following public backlash, the Belgian FA promptly removed the video from their social media platforms and offered an apology.
Stefan Van Loock, Belgium’s press officer, addressed the issue before a pre-match press conference, stating that the video was intended to be humorous and not an attack on anyone.
He acknowledged their misjudgment and expressed regret for any offense caused.
The incident occurred in the lead-up to a highly anticipated Euro 2024 round of 16 clash between the neighboring rivals, Belgium and France.
This match presents an opportunity for Belgium to avenge their 1-0 loss to France in the 2018 World Cup semi-final.
Despite the retirement of many players from Belgium’s “golden generation,” key figures like Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku continue to showcase their skills.
Meanwhile, France has yet to meet the high expectations set for them before the tournament.
The match is scheduled for Monday, with the victor advancing to face either Portugal or Slovenia in the quarter-finals the following weekend.
