AliousBBC Springwatch presenter Chris Packham has recently criticized Tottenham Hotspur’s plans to build a women’s training academy in Whitewebbs Park, as reported by James Cracknell.
Sean Wilkinson, chair of Friends of Whitewebbs Park and leading campaigner against the project, remains optimistic about launching a legal appeal.
This comes after an unsuccessful judicial review of Enfield Council’s decision to lease over half of the park to the Premier League club.
Wilkinson’s lawyers are awaiting a response regarding a potential Court of Appeal review.
Packham has joined the debate, describing Spurs’ plans as “nonsensical” in a Daily Mirror interview.
He likened the situation to a David versus Goliath scenario, pitting environmental concerns against the economic power of the Premier League.
An independent ecological survey highlighted Whitewebbs’ rich biodiversity, including various bat and butterfly species.
The survey concluded that Tottenham’s plans would be detrimental to this “exceptional landscape.”
Packham argued that the loss of valuable green space and acid-rich grassland for football pitches is counterproductive, especially given the importance of urban green spaces for nature conservation and mental health.
Wilkinson welcomed Packham’s support and the increased visibility it brings to the Save Whitewebbs campaign.
The group recently raised an additional £10,000 for their legal efforts.
Tottenham Hotspur submitted formal plans in April, proposing to use 18% of the park for the women’s academy.
The plans include measures such as tree planting and creating wildflower meadows to offset environmental impact.
The 25-year, £2 million lease agreement between Spurs and the council is contingent on planning permission.
Both Tottenham Hotspur and Enfield Council declined to comment on the story.
