A former Everton player, once acquired for £25 million, is about to join an MLS team after discussions with several European clubs.

Everton fans are well aware of some recent unsuccessful transfers, including Dele Alli, Cenk Tosun, and Moise Kean.

However, the summer of 2024 has shown promise with permanent signings like Illman Ndiaye and Tim Iroegbunam.

The club is also close to signing Napoli midfielder Jesper Lindstrøm.

Jean-Philippe Gbamin, who Everton signed for £25 million in 2019 but only made eight appearances for the club, is set to move to the MLS.

After leaving Everton in 2023, Gbamin joined French second-tier club USL Dunkerque.

Now, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the 28-year-old Ivory Coast international is heading to New York City Red Bulls, reportedly signing a contract until December 2026 with an option for an additional year.

Since leaving Everton, Gbamin played 21 times for Dunkerque in the 2023/24 season, scoring twice and providing one assist.

This marks a significant improvement in playing time compared to his Everton stint.

For Everton, avoiding expensive mistakes like Gbamin is crucial.

The club’s new strategy seems to focus on signing young talent at reasonable prices.

Manager Sean Dyche’s recent transfer activity, including the impending Lindstrøm signing, suggests this new approach is working well for the Toffees.
